IT WAS A FANTASTIC DAY!

On Tuesday, January 31st, 2023,  we held our 1st ever event…our Open House to introduce WESeniors Strathcona to the seniors in the county, and what an incredible turnout!

100 LOOT BAGS!

We surprised the first 100 guests with loot bags and they had their choice of a loot bag with or without a cute stuffed animal.  Many of our attendees grabbed up the stuffed animals, telling us how they were going to give them to their grandkids and in some cases great-grandkids!

SENIOR FRAUD ALERT WEBSITE

The WESeniors Strathcona staff were able to meet the attendees and tell them all about the Senior Fraud Alert website, where they are able to learn about the free online SPOT AND STOP THE SCAM course (www.seniorfraudalert.ca), as well as learn about current scams in Canada and Alberta. The attendees were also provided with free magnets so they can easily find the website and resources.  The best part…we had over 50 people sign up for the monthly Senior Fraud Alert e-newsletter so they can receive current information and alerts about when scams are happening in our neighborhood!

WE HAD SOME FANTASTIC GUEST SPEAKERS!

First of all, we would like to send a huge thank you to our guest speakers:

First up was Jolyn Hall of Edmonton55 who opened our day with an amazing presentation “Home Safe Home – 10 Tips to Successfully Age at Home”.  She gave us some practical tips and some great suggestions on how to ensure we are safe in our homes.  Her main takeaways…get rid of our area rugs as they are a tripping hazard and put a motion light under our bed so when we wake up in the middle of the night, the light prevents us from tripping over something!

Strathcona County Family & Community Services educated us about all of the different supports and services available to older adults in Strathcona County.  Did you know they have a fantastic website (click here!) that outlines:

The Sherwood Park RCMP gave a fantastic presentation on scams, mail theft, identity fraud, and more!   One of their key messages was for all of us to make sure we report when we are victims of a crime.  This allows their staff to use analytics to see where crime is happening within the county, identify trends and allocate more officers to those areas!

Make sure to sign up for our monthly e-news because they will be sharing monthly tips with us that we will be passing on to you!

We ended our presentations with staff from Strathcona County Recreation, Parks, and Culture who had us all do a “7th inning stretch” before they walked us through some of the different classes and rec centres where older adults can do programs and activities.  Visit their website (click here or on the link below) where you can see:
